The Wayfarer
Twenty years ago, I read a story about a lady known as Peace Pilgrim. Between 1953 and 1981, Mildred Lisette Norman Ryder, spiritual teacher and non-violence advocate, walked more than 25,000 miles across America, spreading a message of peace.
This amazing lady believed wholeheartedly in the search for peace, internationally, between individuals and within the self, and worked for years to achieve her own personal inner harmony.
Each time she walked across America, she spread her message that only love can overcome hate, only light can chase away darkness, and this is as fresh and relevant today as it has always been. She explained that:
“These are laws governing human conduct, which apply as rigidly as the law of gravity. When we disregard these laws in any walk of life, chaos results. Through obedience to these laws, this world of ours could enter into a period of peace and richness beyond our fondest dreams.”
My ex-wife Aly and myself became inspired by her story and we wrote a song called The Wayfarer, which tells the story of Peace Pilgrim and her incredible spiritual and physical journey.
We found her story deeply inspiring, not only because of her determination and dedication, but also because she believed in humanity so strongly that she relied entirely on the kindness of strangers for both food and shelter. This is an important message to us all; however hard things may seem, there is always someone that will offer you help when you need it.
I’ve recently brought the song to life with the help of a few online session musicians and my good friend Dean Rhymes, who both produced and performed the song. You can check out the video on YouTube, and if you’d like to buy it, the song is available on iTunes. You can watch the video below:
