Find Your Purpose
In our fast paced society, it’s easy to become stuck in a rut without even noticing. We are often so busy trying to keep up with work, family, socialising and other commitments, that we stop paying attention how we are feeling, and this leads to stress and frustration. Taking time to regroup and find your purpose can be enormously beneficial, both to you and to those closest to you.
If you have experienced any of the following in the last few months, with no medical reason, discovering or rediscovering your purpose could be helpful.
- Tiredness – despite no change in your usual routine
- Stress – reacting badly to things that wouldn’t ordinarily upset you
- Frustration – feeling that you never have time to do the things that you love
Follow these steps to get back on your path:
Let go of tradition
I feel for the kids when they are preparing to leave school or college, as they are so often asked what they are going to do with the rest of their lives. Very few people know their purpose at age 18, and although our parents and grandparents stayed in the same career for the whole of their working lives, one of the huge benefits of modern life is that you no longer have do so. There is no end to the opportunities out there, so never forget that.
Fresh starts are not just for teenagers! If you are stuck in a rut with your life, taking some time to think about what you want and need from your life, will help you move forward, get excited and feel challenged. The destination can keep moving and changing if you need it to; as with life, the joy is found in the journey.
Finding your purpose is not always easy or straightforward. One of the key factors that you may face is your own inner voice, telling you that you are doing the wrong thing, that you are not good enough, that you will fail. By all means, notice this inner voice, and understand why it speaks this way, but let it go without judgement. It is natural to have doubts and fears when you are trying a new way of life, but that doesn’t mean that the inner voice is speaking the truth!
Say yes more!
The more opportunities that you take, the more will present themselves. Set yourself a challenge to say yes to the next three opportunities that arise (barring anything illegal or immoral, of course!) and see what happens next. Life is full of amazing possibilities and it’s so easy to stop noticing when they become suppressed by the business of day to day life.
Change your scenery
If you are feeling stuck, or in a rut, get away. Go where you will get a complete change of scenery; a place that will inspire you and help you to feel positive. Maybe it’s wild and beautiful places that you love or places with a lot of culture and history.
If your budget and schedule is tight take a day or weekend trip locally, stay in a B&B or go camping. Or if you have more time and money, go further afield on a longer adventure to a place you’ve always wanted to visit. Changing your surroundings resets your brain and your attention span. Getting back to nature in particular is beneficial, releasing serotonin and allowing your subconscious side to reboot and get creative.
Get back to what you love
If you had a childhood dream, get back to it. If as a child you loved to dig for treasure, join a metal detecting or mudlarking group, volunteer for a day at a museum or take a course on your favourite historical period.
If you were artistic as a child, visit galleries, join an art class, get a sketchbook, or start working with clay. It is a myth that only children benefit from ‘playing’; allowing yourself to relax and work creatively and passionately is one of the best therapies available!
Keep the pressure off
Don’t feel that you have to change everything in your life at once, or get stressed that you are not finding the right opportunities. Take time to breath, and believe that the universe will offer you what you need at the right time. If you are dedicated and open to possibility, there is no end to where your life’s journey will take you.
All the best,
Glenn

Fabulous blog post Glenn. I really appreciated reading this right now. It’s so easy to become stuck in our lives and stay stuck because we don’t know how to change it. I never thought of the little things we can do to make simple changes like changing our surroundings and going out more. Best blog post I’ve read in a long time x
really good philosophy and best article ever read.
Thanks for the post and suggestions Glenn 👍🏼
The sample meditation was great, the visual was a bit too much distraction for me as I’m used to just audio and blocking out other senses to go within. In saying that it’s certainly still beautifully done with lots of time and effort I’m sure to the designer.
